(UPDATE as of June 2019) The tennis courts at P.O. Faulkner are CLOSED until funding is secured to do the much needed renovations. The courts at War Memorial Park are open and available for use. Our hope is to receive these funds from continued donations, possible grants opportunities and our local governing entities so that we can re-open these well-used tennis courts.
The P.O. Faulkner tennis courts opened for use in 1980. The four courts are home to the Martinsburg High School boys and girls tennis program and are typically used 7 days a week, year-round (weather permitting). After 38 years and only one resurfacing, these courts are is desperate need of some serious TLC!
The estimate to make these courts safe and usable for all is approximately $100,000. A $30,000 donation has been committed from a local individual for this project. We are hoping that the school board and local government officials will help with the remaining balance. However, we are still wanting to raise awareness for funds for this much needed endeavor. Due to the current conditions of the courts, if we are unable to make improvements, we may be forced to close the tennis courts for safety.
If you or your business/organization are wanting to help by donation and/or support of the renovation of P.O. Faulkner, please spread the word! Donations can be made to M-BCP&R (please memo P.O. Faulkner Tennis Courts).
This is just one of the major renovations that needs to take place in the Berkeley County parks system. If you know of another project that you can assist in getting started, please let us know!
